Greetings, Yall!
So much has been happening with the BACKYARDS & BEYOND: Mississippians and Their Stories project.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you from around the country who have joined our efforts as supporters of this project. It is only because of you that we are head long into its development. Listed below are some of the updates we want to share with you.
The exhibition's premiere opened to the public on March 8, 2008 at the Mississippi Arts Center in Jackson, MS and will show there through June 8, 2008. (schedule additions will be posted as museums are confirmed)
All 81 exhibition paintings have been purchased!
The Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at the University of Southern Mississippi worked with us to create an exit kiosk offering an opportunity for viewers to record (visually and orally) their reactions to the exhibit, disability awareness/inclusion and their own stories regarding Katrina.
Over 8,000 photographs taken during the documenting process.
Editing of oral histories completed.
Process of booking museums continues - the exhibition was presented at the Southeastern Museums Conference Expo in Little Rock, AR in October.
H.C. Porter Gallery, Creative Spirit Studio and project operations for Backyards and Beyond are settled into their new home in Vicksburg, MS (30 miles west of Jackson).
Process of acquiring Corporate Sponsorships for Traveling Exhibition ongoing. See www.backyardsandbeyond.org for more information.
Nonprofit Arts Organization Backyards and Beyond formed in June 2006 for the purpose of managing and curating the exhibition. Paintings will be on loan to the nonprofit (contact us at info@backyardsandbeyond.org).
